Mayo Clinic Photovoice Project
I was contacted by the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN to explore the possibility of integrating Photovoice into their public heath work. I co-facilitated with Creative Narrations a multi-session, virtual, Train-the-Trainer (TTT) workshop with researchers and public health practitioners working in the Mayo Clinic. They learned the philosophy and ethics behind Photovoice and practiced hands-on Photovoice tools and strategies. After the TTT, I coached one of the Mayo Clinic participants over several months as she facilitated a Photovoice process with Somali and Latino community members in the Rochester community. The community members photographed their public health concerns and ideas and shared their images, words and policy recommendations in an exhibit that traveled across the community.
University of Arizona Slow Streets Photovoice Project
The University of Arizona’s Department of Nutritional Sciences and City of Tucson Department of Transportation were spearheading a Slow Streets Project. In partnership with Creative Narrations, I co-facilitated a multi-session, virtual, Train-the-Trainer workshop for nutritional sciences and public health workers. They learned the Photovoice process through hands-on activities and then developed strategies for applying the process to their Slow Streets Project.
EMERGE & Boys to Men Digital Storytelling Workshops
I had approached the domestic violence prevention nonprofit EMERGE concerned about how our society and the mainstream media represent masculinity and what is means to be a “strong man.” In partnership with StoryCenter, I co-facilitated a 3-day digital storytelling workshop with male-identifying youth who were participants in the Boys to Men organization. Then we co-facilitated a workshop with men (associated with EMERGE) who had previously committed domestic violence and they each created their own digital stories about what their life journey and how they are working on themselves and in their community to address domestic violence. EMERGE premiered the digital stories at the Loft Cinema with a panel discussion as a way to launch a new program – a hotline for men to call if they are about to commit domestic violence and need an intervention.
The Nature Conservancy & Snohomish Conservation District Photovoice Project
The Snohomish Conservation District & The Nature Conservancy were working with local farmers to explore the challenges they faced with climate change, increased urbanization, flooding and other issues. In partnership with Creative Narrations, I co-facilitated an in-person workshop with farmers, who learned photovoice and photography, and then documented their lives, resilience and challenges through images and writing. The farmers then developed a set of policy recommendations based on key themes in their images and presented their work and recommendations to policy makers and others throughout Snohomish.
Urban Resources Initiative Digital Storytelling Workshop
The Urban Resources Initiative (URI), a nonprofit in New Haven, CT, works with neighborhoods to use urban forestry and greenspaces to build healthier communities. They have been partnering with the nonprofit EMERGE in New Haven, which helps formerly incarcerated individuals develop workforce skills and jobs. Together they have created a program for formerly incarcerated individuals to work as community urban foresters. In partnership with Creative Narrations, I co-facilitated a digital storytelling workshop in which formerly incarcerated men of color shared their life stories and the transformative role of urban forestry in their lives. You can view some of their digital stories here.
