110°: Tucson’s Youth Tell Tucson’s Stories

VOICES: Community Stories Past and Present (www.voicesinc.org) is a Tucson-based nonprofit organization that documents Tucson’s community stories and inspires individuals to explore themselves and their connection to place. In 2000, I volunteered with VOICES to teach photography to youth who were producing an oral history book, No Me Veas Diferente, about their lives in public housing. In 2001, I founded VOICES’ photography program and as VOICES’ Director of Photography co-managed their youth-produced magazine, 110°. The 110° After School Magazine Project hires and trains low-income, young writers and photographers to share stories about their lives and communities. 110° was published as an insert in the Arizona Daily Star, Tucson’s largest daily newspapers, reaching an audience of over 200,000 and is now distributed through a variety of media outlets.
